Bike the Scenic Way: Route-Building for First-Time Bikepackers
You don't need a month or a titanium frame. A well-planned overnight loop is the perfect intro. Start with a 40–60 mile circuit near home. Pack one dry bag, cook one real meal, sleep under something real. The point isn't the distance. The point is going.
Route planning tools for bikepackers: Komoot (best for European routes), Ride with GPS (best for North America), and Bikepacking.com's route database (vetted by people who've actually ridden them). Pick a loop, not a point-to-point, for your first trip. You always want to end where you started.
Gear minimum for an overnight: handlebar bag, frame bag or top tube bag, small seatpost bag. Shelter, sleep system, food, water filter, tools. Everything else is optional. The lighter you go, the more you ride. That's the whole equation.
